I think wide or 'barefoot' shoes are best. Your toes get room to spread out how they would if you were barefoot, and that feels pretty comfortable and makes you more stable. There are a lot of brands, some with zero drop (meaning they're flat and the heel isn't raised at all) some with a more standard sole. The thing that puts people off of these shoes in my opinion is that they look a bit goofy... Kind of like kids shoes. They're wide in the toebox and people find that ugly. Personally, I prefer the comfort and health of my feet over aesthetics, but I'm also not a stranger to wanting to look good so to each his own.

Anyway! Some brands:

Running shoes: Altra (you can get these at XXL)
Hiking/true barefoot: Vivobarefoot (only online)
Casual: Lems (only online)

Price-wise... yeah you're still kinda fucked, but my Altras have lasted me a while, and friends who have used both Lems and vivos seem to have had them for years without much problem, so maybe a worthwhile investment?

Sounding like an infomercial now, but maybe you find some of this useful!
